On Wednesday, April 23rd, the Placentia Chamber of Commerce proudly hosted its first and only “Meet the Candidates” event at the Placentia Bay Cultural Arts Centre.
The forum welcomed Anthony Germain, Liberal Party Candidate, and Liam Ryan, NDP Candidate of Canada, representing the riding of Terra Nova – The Peninsulas. Unfortunately, Jonathan Rowe, the Conservative Party of Canada candidate, was unable to attend due to a prior commitment.
Moderated by Wayne Power, President of the Placentia Chamber of Commerce, the event offered a valuable opportunity for local electors to hear directly from the candidates. The forum encouraged meaningful dialogue as residents shared their concerns and aspirations, and the candidates outlined their positions on key issues facing the region.
Each candidate was allotted two minutes per topic to present their views on a range of pressing matters, including:
- Cost of Living and Affordability
- Placentia Bay as an Industrial Hub
- Support for Municipalities
- Economic Development and Business Supports
- Public Safety
- Health Care Services in Newfoundland and Labrador
- The Fishery
- Tourism
- Housing, Climate, and Environment
- Canadian Identity and Trade
To close the event on a lighter note, the candidates participated in a brief segment of relaxed and informal questions, giving attendees a chance to get to know them beyond politics.
Each participant was then given two minutes for a closing statement, providing a final opportunity to appeal for support and reinforce their key messages.
After the formal proceedings, attendees and candidates mingled in an informal setting over light refreshments, rounding out an informative and engaging evening of civic participation.
